Book burnings

While I'm generally against burning any book, there are a few exceptions. Twilight is one of them. Religious books come in a close second. So when I heard that the Koran burning in America wasn't going ahead, I took it with a twinge of disappointment. You may think that's rather hypocritical of me, or that I'm just being provocative for the sake of it. But let me quantify this.

Books, in general, aren't sacred. They contain knowledge, ethics, morals and world views of their authors and their times. But what's most important about them is that they're read with a critical eye. They're scrutinised and debated, vilified and praised. Books are always approached with questions. Religious books are not. They're thought to be above criticism, said to be beyond reproach by mere men. I disagree with this. And so I think it's important to criticise religious books with the harshest judgement. Believe me, if Mien Kampf or Das Kapital were considered sacred (not an unlikely scenario) I would support their burning just as passionately.

So hopefully, even if this pastor doesn't have the balls to do it, someone will burn a Koran. Because really, who doesn't like a little controversy?
